7 Natural Antihistamines That Help Reduce Allergy Symptoms

Histamine intolerance has become an epidemic throughout the entire population.  Food allergies and environmental allergies can all be linked to an overproduction of histamine.  This can be extremely frustrating, as well as discouraging for those suffering from histamine intolerance.

Luckily, there are several natural antihistamines that can be incorporated into the diet to help relieve symptoms.   Below are 7 natural options that can help combat those pesky and annoying allergies.

1. Sea salt

Sea salts are one of the greatest natural antihistamines on the planet.  In fact, in countries outside of the United States, the prescribed medicine for allergies is water and salt (1).

You can test the effectiveness of sea salt by applying a small pinch on the tip of your tongue next time your allergies flare up.  Take note, at how fast sea salt is able to shut down the histamine response in the body.  It’s important to always use sea salt and not table salt.  Table salt is pure poison and should be avoided at all costs.  We personally like Celtic Grey Sea Salt.

2. Vitamin C

Studies have revealed that vitamin c can aid in the bodies detoxification of histamine more rapidly (2).  However, be careful with citrus fruits as they have been shown to be a histamine liberator, meaning they free up histamine which could make symptoms worse.

Also, stay away from synthetic vitamin c (ascorbic acid) as it tends to lower stomach acid levels over time and causes more problems in the long run.  We personally like acerola cherry for our vitamin c needs.  Acerola is a whole food and a natural source of vitamin c which is completely bio available to the body.

3. Nettle

Nettle leaf can naturally block histamine receptor sites, thus reducing allergy symptoms (3).  Nettle also contains a high amount of organic minerals that benefit overall health and help with weight loss.   Due to its energizing and supportive effects in the body, it’s great for those with adrenal fatigue type issues.

4. Garlic

Garlic helps remove allergens form the bloodstream.  It does this by supporting the immune system so that it can function more effectively and not overreact.  Garlic is also a great natural antibiotic and is perfect for those looking to bolster their immune system during flu season.  In order to avoid the dreaded garlic breath, we recommend using an Aged Garlic Extract.  The aging process gets rid of the garlic smell and enhances the properties found in the garlic making it more effective.

Holy Basil

Holy Basil has been used in Ayurveda for centuries.  This herb is said to protect the body from stress and promote balance within the body.  This powerful Adaptogen helps lower cortisol in the body which naturally reduces stress levels.  It also contains anaphylactic, antihistamine and mast cell stabilizing properties (4).

Chamomile

Chamomile has been shown to inhibit the release of histamine from mast cells (5).  It’s also great for those looking to reduce stress levels in the body. Chamomile was traditionally given as a sleep tonic due to its sedative properties.

Watercress

A study revealed that watercress can inhibit 60% of all histamine released from mast cells (6).  Like nettle, this plant is extremely mineral dense.  Watercress makes a great option for those looking for natural allergy relief.
